The Venue
Picking a venue is one of the first things that you will do, and it’s important that you think about the potential themes for the wedding because the venue makes a big difference. You can either pick the theme and then choose a venue to suit it, or pick the venue and decide on a theme that works well. Whichever way around you decide to do it, you can’t think about one without thinking about the other. If you are not interested in the traditional fairytale wedding theme, which is a bit boring to be honest, then a lot of classic wedding venues won’t really work for you. They’re all set up for that kind of wedding and it can be hard to introduce a more interesting theme in a venue that is very traditional. Equally, if you decide on a garden wedding instead of a traditional wedding reception, for example, you need to start thinking about a theme that fits well with that location.
The Dresses
If you are throwing convention out of the window and planning a wedding that suits you rather than simply following the traditions, you may decide to go a different route with your dress. You can still go for a classic white wedding dress if you like, but if you want a non-traditional wedding and you don’t like the idea of a white dress, you can just pick something else. But if you are going to do that, you should consider how it fits in with your theme. Often, it’s best to come up with a theme first and then decide on a style of dress that fits with it. For example, if you are going for a 1950’s style wedding, you have plenty of options for vintage dresses. As well as your own dress, it’s important that you think about the bridesmaid dresses as well, so you all fit well with the theme. If you have a clear idea of what kind of dress you want, it may be best to choose the dress first and then start thinking of a theme based around that.
Your Budget
Nobody wants to think about the budget when they’re planning their wedding, they just want to plan the perfect day and not worry about whether they can afford it or not. Unfortunately, you can’t really avoid it and you will need to write a budget for your wedding and stick to it if you don’t want to end up in financial trouble. You need to keep the budget in mind when you are deciding on your theme because you would be surprised how expensive all of the small details like decorations or place cards can get. If you are leaning heavily into your theme and putting a lot of thought into the decoration, the costs are quickly going to spiral out of control. Before you get too attached to a theme, think honestly about whether you can actually afford to do it or not.
Your Relationship
The most important thing that you should think about when trying to decide on a theme is your relationship. The best alternative wedding themes are built around things that are special to the couple, so think about your relationship and the things that are important to you both. It could be a hobby that you share or a place that you both love to visit, perhaps somewhere that has special memories for both of you. It doesn’t matter what your theme is, as long as it means something to you. If you consider all of these things, you will be able to decide on the perfect theme for your non-traditional wedding.
